LIV
The band LIV is a French - Norwegian ongoing musical collaboration that started in 2013 while the pianist Thierry Girault lived and worked in Tromsø/NO. During this year he met Liv Hanne Haugen and Øystein Blix, and together they started exploring and mixing different musical expressions.
The guitarist Alain Kawczak joined shortly after, and since then they’ve kept on exploring, drawing inspiration from joik, jazz, pop and singer-songwriter tradition, creating their own unique sound.
They tour regularly with concerts in France, Switzerland, Northern-Norway and Svalbard. Since 2021 they also have had collaborations with big symphony orchestras, and had their music transported into this format.
They have given out two discs on Losen Records: Kemedu (2015) and HAGE (2021), where the very well known Sami Artist Mari Boine, features.

The resulting music played by the group is bold, innovative and very unique, which is pretty unusual these days, where individuality and experimentation become obsolete.
… But Haugen's vocals are the most dominant factor which makes this music so wonderfully bizarre. She completely disregards any conventions whatsoever, using her voice to sing, howl, screech, scream, yell and whisper, whatever seems appropriate at a particular moment. Her wordless vocalese is hauntingly beautiful and extremely powerful. When all these factors are combined and intertwined into a tapestry of sounds, the result is simply overwhelming.
